Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has openly criticized Netflix’s top executives, accusing them of hypocrisy when selecting content for the Indian market.

Taking to Instagram, he expressed his admiration for the British drama Adolescence while lamenting the restrictions faced by Indian filmmakers on the platform.

Sharing his thoughts on the show, Kashyap wrote, “I am numb and envious and jealous that someone can go and make that.” He praised the performances of Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham, highlighting the immense effort put into the series, which was shot in single takes.

In the comments section, the Sacred Games director directly called out Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos and Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria. Criticizing their handling of Indian content, he stated, “If they were pitched this, most probably they would have rejected it or turned it into a 90-minute film.”

He also recalled his struggles with Netflix after Sacred Games, alleging a “total lack of empathy, courage, and dumbness” within the team. Kashyap accused the streaming giant of prioritizing subscriptions over quality, saying, “This hypocrisy of Ted and Bela via a vis the Indian market of 1.4 billion people… frustrates me.”

Despite his frustration, Kashyap ended on a hopeful note, expressing optimism for Indian content on Netflix, writing, “Fingers crossed for a better future.”
