Foreign media reports say that more than 4,000 actors, directors, and film professionals from around the world have signed an open pledge to boycott the Israeli film industry. The move comes in response to the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The pledge condemns Israeli institutions it accuses of being involved in “genocide and apartheid.” Those who signed have promised not to screen, act in, or collaborate with film festivals, cinemas, broadcasters, or production houses linked to Israel’s state system.

Big names such as Joaquin Phoenix, Emma D’Arcy, Elliot Page, Eric André, Rooney Mara, and Guy Pearce are among the signatories. Other stars, including Sophie Stone, Javier Bardem, Tilda Swinton, Mark Ruffalo, and Olivia Colman, had already voiced their support earlier.

Observers say this is one of the most significant shows of solidarity from the global film community so far. Artists have also urged Palestinian filmmakers to keep resisting atrocities. The Guardian described it as a historic protest.

Reactions in Hollywood, however, are split. Some actors view the boycott as a necessary moral stand. Others argue it could limit dialogue or unfairly affect people in the industry who are not involved in politics.

Major studios have responded cautiously. Paramount, for example, rejected the idea of a cultural boycott, insisting that film and art should remain independent spaces for creativity and exchange.

With tensions in Gaza worsening, the film industry now faces a critical moment. The boycott may reshape how art and activism connect, testing Hollywood’s ability to stay neutral in times of moral and political crisis.
