Ajay Devgn and Kannada actor Kiccha Sudeep had a Twitter dispute last week about Hindi being a national language. Jaaved Jaaferi, an actor, has now weighed in on the national language question. He stated that, like Ajay, he believed Hindi to be India’s national language.

Hindi, on the other hand, is not and has never been India’s official language. India does not have a national language, although the union government uses Hindi and English as official languages.

“Constitutionally, there is no one language,” Jaaved told Indian Express. That is what I observed. I was looking at the official Indian languages and discovered that no language is designated as the national language by the constitution. That’s what I discovered. I had even assumed that Hindi was the official language of India. But, according to the constitution, no language is designated as a national language.”
