Deepika Padukone will play a cop in Rohit Shetty’s upcoming film Singham Again, making her the first female cop in his Cop Universe (Shilpa Shetty also plays a cop, but in Rohit’s web series rather than film). This was officially announced by Rohit Shetty on Thursday at a song launch event for Cirkus. But Katrina Kaif came before Deepika. Well, nearly. Katrina had an audition in front of Rohit last year while promoting Sooryavanshi on a quiz show, pleading with him to cast her as a cop in his flicks.

Ajay Devgn’s Singham and its sequel launched Rohit Shetty’s cop world, which has since expanded to include Simmba and Sooryavanshi starring Ranveer Singh and Akshay Kumar. In the most recent movie, Katrina and Ranveer both made brief appearances. Rohit and Katrina appeared as special guests on Ranveer’s quiz programme The Big Picture while the movie was being promoted.

On the show, Katrina told Rohit in Hindi, “I think after Sooryavanshi, you should also make a film with a female cop.” She then went on to dress in a sari and put on a police officer’s cap before doing a dummy audition on stage. She even acted out a Simmba sequence with Ranveer, much to Rohit and the studio audience’s amusement.

Following Deepika’s revelation on Thursday, many admirers wondered how Katrina must be feeling as they uploaded the clip on Reddit. The fact that Kat is Sooryavanshi’s wife already makes her a part of the universe, as one sane Reddit commenter did note. Her inclusion in Singham 3 would be absurd.

Although there have been female leads in the cop world, none of them have up to now portrayed cops. That will alter in Singham Again and the Indian Police Force. The former is a web series starring Sidharth Malhotra, Shilpa Shetty, and Vivek Oberoi that is being created for Prime Video. In the latter, the third instalment in the Singham series, Deepika Padukone will co-star with Ajay Devgn as a police officer.
