The biggest hit of the year, RRR, has been dubbed a “regressive picture” by Ratna Pathak Shah. The audience will not keep viewing movies like the SS Rajamouli picture, she claimed, as long as filmmakers don’t view their own work critically. After its March release, the movie brought in over $1200 million worldwide. It also received five Critics’ Choice Award nominations and two Golden Globe nominations.

The real-life revolutionaries Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem in RRR are played by Ram Charan and Jr. NTR. Ajay Devgn and Alia Bhatt play major roles in the pre-independence era drama, which is also set in that time period.

At a book event, Ratna Pathak Shah spoke about the movie. According to a report, the actor said, “Films like RRR are so popular today. But it’s a regressive film. It looks backward while we should look forward. We just feel whatever we are doing is good because we are part of the mother of democracy — India.”

“Until filmmakers will not see their work critically, we will have to watch films like RRR. But we don’t like criticism. Our ego gets hurt, This atmosphere is created by so many big people and unfortunately, we have accepted it,” she added.

Kutch Express, a movie that Ratna directed in Gujarati, is now in the works. The movie, which was directed by Viral Shah, is her feature film debut in Gujarati. Manasi Parekh, Darsheel Safary, and Dharmendra Gohil play important parts as well.

In a statement last month, she had discussed the movie and remarked, “I’ve been looking forward to doing a Gujarati film for a long time, but couldn’t find anything really interesting. Then came this film with a good script & a good team & to be shot in Kutch so this was irresistible.”
