On December 24, 1993, the Hindi movie with Juhi Chawla, Sunny Deol, and Shah Rukh Khan was released just before Christmas. It went on to become a great success and received ten nominations the following year for the Filmfare Awards. In a previous chat with his father, the director Yash Chopra, Uday Chopra disclosed that it was him and his buddy, the actor Hrithik Roshan, who were the inspiration for the creation of the movie. In addition, Hrithik had a hand in naming the movie after his own amateur film venture.

A brief video of the exchange between Uday and his father Yash was posted on Twitter by a user. In it, Uday is explaining to him how the 1989 Australian motion picture starring Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman, and Billy Zane.

The suspenseful story takes place at sea and centres on a mourning couple who take in a stranger after his ship goes down. The movie was released prior to Nicole’s rise to stardom in Hollywood, and she speaks with her native Australian accent.

In the conversation, Uday recalls, “The fact about Darr, the way it started off is Hrithik and me were seeing a movie once, a very less known movie called Dead Calm. We saw the video of the film and decided to make Adi [his brother, Aditya Chopra] see it, just to show it’s a very good film. Adi saw the film and he loved it instantly. That is the inspiration for Darr that actually came about.”

He added, “In fact, the title Darr is the title that Hrithik had kept for a movie that he had actually made, an amateur film that he had shot. It was Hrithik’s title and Adi when he decided on making this film, he told Hrithik that I am going to use this title because it suits very well.”

Hrithik worked in his family’s home productions as a kid performer before breaking into the acting industry. He helped his father Rakesh Roshan on films including Khudgarz (1987), King Uncle (1993), Karan Arjun (1995), and Koyla (1997), the bulk of which starred Shah Rukh.
