Rani Mukerji speaks about the time when she joined film in 1990s
For more than 25 years, Rani Mukerji has worked in the film industry. In 1996, she appeared in the Bengali film Biyer Phool for the first time, and in the subsequent Hindi film Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, she made her acting debut.
The star recently admitted that she wasn’t really interested in pursuing a career in movies as a child. She clarified that despite coming from a film background, her parents seldom ever discussed the industry at home.
After a two-year absence, the actor is making a comeback this month with a new movie, Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway. Rani plays an Indian woman living in Norway whose young children are taken away from her because she is deemed an unfit mother in the drama based on actual events. Her mother persuaded her to pursue acting when she was younger.
Afterwards, Rani understood that by working, she could contribute to her family’s improvement in their financial status, which was not excellent at the time. “When I grew up, an offer came my way. My mother very politely put it to me that try it, if it doesn’t work for you, you can go back to studies. Maybe I didn’t realise at that time, the situation in my family was such that there was a need of financial help. But I didn’t think of this much as this. No child thinks their parents aren’t doing well.”
Said she, “The kind of lifestyle that my parents tried to give me and my brother, it was quite comfortable. I’m so glad that she did because I’m really in love with my profession today.”She had initially considered being a lawyer or an interior designer as she was growing up.
Before Rani was born, Ram Mukherjee, one of the founders of Filmalaya Productions, directed movies. He introduced Rani with Biyer Phool, Prosenjit Chatterjee, and Indrani Haldar, as well as directing the movies Hum Hindustani (1960) and Leader (1964).
