Lauren Speed claims that a show excludes black women
Netflix is being grilled by Lauren Speed. The former cast member of Love is Blind slammed the dating program for having few scenes with Black women in season three.
According to TODAY, 15 women were cast in the third season of the show, including Alexa, Amanda, Ashley, Brannigan, Charita, Chelsey, Colleen, Jessica, Kalekia, Kimberlee, Loren, Nancy, Raven, Valerie, and Zanab. Only five of those 15 couples—Alexa and Brennon, Nancy and Bartise, Colleen and Matt, Zainab and Cole, and Raven and Sikiru—were depicted as being married on the show.
“I don’t like how LIB be cutting all the black women,” Speed wrote on Twitter on Oct. 24. “How come they are always in the trailer but not the show…”
Speed, who wed Cameron Hamilton in the 2018 season one finale, also said that the production chooses which couples interact.
“I know it’s slim pickings but about 85% of the couples be forced (just moving forward for entertainment purposes) anyway,” she continued. “Y’all could at least force some more sisters to move forward throughout the show.”
One user inquired about Speed, “She said, “It’s couples that get engaged that aren’t even shown sometimes. How do you think they determine what makes the final show?” I believe they simply display the content they find to be amusing.”
“Then, what do they do with those individuals? Simply express gratitude for your time. “Another commenter made a reference to the entrants whose video isn’t shown. “Yea hahaha send them home and quit recording them,” Speed retorted.
Love is Blind has received similar criticism in the past for what it does and does not air. According to Variety, there were eight engaged couples in the first and second seasons, but only six couples’ adventures were shown to the audience.
Chris Coelen, the show’s creator, defended the group’s decision-making procedure.
In an interview with Variety that was released in February, he said, “I think it’s quite hilarious for somebody to say, ‘Oh, you put somebody who was, you know, heavy in there, and then you simply didn’t follow them. “It’s not like somebody wants it to happen or wants it to stay that way. Just being true to the experiment is what I want to see happen.”
He went on, “People are placed inside. They are blind to one another. We follow it if they fall in love; otherwise, we don’t.”
Netflix was contacted by the news for comment, but no response was received.
