 Both of Carly Simon’s sisters passed away from cancer one day apart, leaving her in despair. Joanna Simon, an opera soprano, passed away from thyroid cancer on Wednesday at the age of 85, while Lucy Simon, a Tony Award-nominated Broadway composer, passed away from metastatic breast cancer on Thursday at the age of 82.

Deadline received confirmation of both fatalities on Friday.

The youngest member of the group, Peter Simon, was a lifelong Martha’s Vineyard photographer who passed away in 2018 at the age of 71 after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

When the news asked for comment, a spokesman for Carly, 75, did not immediately provide it.

When she and Carly created the renowned folk duo The Simon Sisters in the early 1960s, Lucy made her debut in the music business.

Lucy later attended nursing school and wed David Levine in 1967 after they released the song “Wynken, Blynken & Nod” in 1964. Jamie and Julie are two of their combined two children.

Later, in the late 1970s, Lucy made a comeback to the music business, and the couple went on to create two Grammy-winning children’s albums, In Harmony and In Harmony 2, in the 1980s.

When Lucy became the third female composer on Broadway, she also had success on a personal level. She was nominated for a Tony that year for her score to The Secret Garden. Doctor Zhivago, her second Broadway production, debuted in 2015.

According to Playbill, Joanna also got her start in the 1960s, making her stage debut in Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” at the New York City Opera in 1962. Throughout her career, the mezzo-soprano performed at the Seattle Opera, with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic.

Joanna left the opera world and went on to work as an Emmy-winning arts reporter for PBS’ The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, a position she held until 1992.

Gerald Walker and Joanna were wed from 1976 till his passing in 2004. Additionally, she shared the final months of newsman Walter Cronkite’s life before his passing in 2019.
