George Clooney popped the question to Amal Clooney one beautiful day, but things didn’t go as planned. Recently, the actor recounted the occasion when he proposed to his wife Amal. But it wasn’t exactly a breeze. It was a fiasco, as George stated during an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show on October 21.

The 61-year-old Clooney stated that his strategy was to have Amal find the ring at dinner while his Aunt Rosemary Clooney’s music was playing. The moment the music started, George instructed Amal to use a box that contained a lighter to relight a candle that he had neatly blown out.

“I go, ‘I think there’s a lighter, could re-light the candle…I think there’s a lighter in that little box,'” George recalled, “And she pulls this thing out, this little drawer, and there’s a diamond ring in there.”

So what was Amal’s response? George seemed to think that it didn’t click immediately away. He rolled his eyes and said, “She looks at it and she’s like, “There’s a ring in there.” Like someone had left a ring there in the past.
