  • Anya Taylor-Joy appreciates her parents’ help.
  • The Menu actress, 26, revealed to host Drew Barrymore during an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show this week that she had experienced bullying because of her appearance when she was younger. Taylor-Joy gave her parents credit for their guidance, which enabled her to look past any unfavourable interactions with her contemporaries.

“I was very, very happy to have my parents,” she recalled. “My mother always said, “You look at the inside of somebody, you look at the inside of somebody,” when I was teased for my appearance. “You don’t look at anything similar, including class. You don’t consider their employment. Only “Do you like that person’s heart?” is asked.”

Barrymore, who has appeared in twisted movies like Scream, praised Taylor-latest Joy’s horror The Menu during the interview, calling it “so unlike any film I’ve watched in a very long time.”

“With The Menu, you really—I had no idea where it was going,” Taylor-Joy said of the new movie, which centers on her character Margot as she and a number of other diners arrive at an upscale island restaurant and run into Ralph Fiennes’ enigmatic chef, who prepares a tantalizing — and sinister — menu for his guests.

Who on Earth could have have predicted it, if you’ve seen the ending? stated Taylor-Joy. “I was so thrilled by the idea of working on something that original and also with these amazing performers,” the author said.

At the The Menu premiere in New York City on Monday, Taylor-co-star Joy’s Nicholas Hoult called the actress “amazing” and revealed to PEOPLE that he has been a fan of hers since viewing The Witch and her Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit.
