McBain passed away on Wednesday after a fight with liver cancer. She passed away while she was at her residence in the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California, according to her writing partner Michael Gregg Michaud, who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter.

He posted on her Facebook account on November 18 that she was ill and going through “a bit of a difficult time” before she passed away.

Although Michaud’s spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment, he did post on Instagram that his “heart is heavy” in the wake of her passing.

Added he, “Diane McBain, an actress and my close friend and collaborator, died quietly today at the Woodland Hills Motion Picture Home. She lost her valiant fight with liver cancer. She will be terribly missed.”

A talent agency discovered McBain at the age of 17 while she was performing in a high school play. She briefly worked as a model for print and television commercials before making her television debut in 1959 on the western series Maverick. The following year, she had an appearance on the show 77 Sunset Strip.

She attributes getting her first film role in the 1960 historical drama Ice Palace, after finding success on television, with prompting her to sign a talent contract early in her career.

She explained to Fox News in May that “I was doing a play, and the talent person at Warner Bros. came to watch it.”

“He believed I would be ideal for the Richard Burton-starring movie Ice Palace when he first saw me. It dealt with Alaska’s statehood. I recall that the project had a number of excellent actors. It was pretty surprising that Warner Bros. signed me to this deal so that I could work on this movie. In the film, I portrayed the granddaughter.”

Following the signing of her contract, McBain’s career took off. She landed a part on Surfside 6 alongside Van Williams and Tory Donahue, and went on to star in more movies, such as 1966’s Spinout, which starred Elvis Presley. In the movie, she played an author vying for the singer’s attention alongside Shelley Fabares and Deborah Walley.

After the musical, he played next to another popular culture star, Adam West, in the 1966 live version of Batman.

She married fellow actor Rodney Burke for two years in 1972 while her career progressed, and the couple had a son, Evan Burke, in 1973. Her most recent endeavors include the publication of The Laughing Bear, her debut novel, in 2020, and the autobiography Famous Enough: A Hollywood Memoir, which she co-wrote with Michaud, in 2014.
