Katie Holmes dress-over-jeans ensemble to end. Well, it continues today. Holmes’ stylist Brie Welch revealed the motivation for the popular outfit and credited Holmes’ tastes for the choice of clothing as well as her own.

“We decided the rich color and subtle bustier effect detailing of the top was elegant and would be fun if paired with jeans,” Welch wrote in an email to the newspaper, “creating a more youthful feel for Jingle Ball and the atmosphere there.”

Holmes attended the 2022 Jingle Ball performance in New York on December 9 wearing a strapless blue TOVE top over a pair of denim and some Margiela sneakers (yep, Welch clarified on Instagram that “IT’S A TOP,” not a dress).

Welch continued, “Katie stated she wanted to wear shoes on the day of (and because she has her own effortless style that should be appreciated here) because it was a concert and obviously there would be a lot of dancing to Dua Lipa (and nothing is comfier!)

The actress’ overall look split fans: On social media, some users adored the appearance while others didn’t. However, a lot of others seem to concur that it brought back memories of the early 2000s.

“Just found out that pic of Katie Holmes everyone’s been sharing is from 2022 and not 2002,” one follower tweeted. Added another, “Katie Holmes woke up & chose to dress like it’s 2001.”

Welch told the news that Holmes was “more than capable of looking stylish in an inadvertent trend 20 years later,” regardless of the decade.
