According to a news release, New Line Cinema has bought the screenplay for Weapons, the team’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed horror movie Barbarian from 2022. The film will now be fast-tracked for a theatrical release, with production beginning later this year, thanks to the acquisition.

According to reports, Universal, Netflix, and Sony/TriStar were all in the running, but New Line ultimately prevailed thanks to their promise of a theatrical release. The concept is the brainchild of writer-director Zach Cregger, who will collaborate with the producers of Barbarian as a producer on the film. J.D. and Roy Lee of Vertigo are both on this crew. Raphael Margules and Lifshitz from BoulderLight Pictures. Also producing is Miri Yoon from Vertigo. Weapons are presently being kept under wraps, but we do know that it will once again be a horror thriller and that Warner Bros. will handle global distribution. Pictures.

Richard Brener, President and Chief Creative Officer of New Line Cinema, released a statement along with the news that the project had been acquired by New Line. He stated:

“Zach proved with Barbarian that he can create a visceral theatrical experience for audiences and that he commands every tool in the filmmaker’s toolbelt. We couldn’t be happier that he, Roy and Miri, and J.D. and Rafi chose New Line to be the home of his next film, and hope it is the first of many to come.”
