M3GAN is generous, beautiful, and bursting with character. Until she loses her mind and begins carrying out her duties in a completely different way, she is a best friend, a wonderful companion, and an “effervescent beaming ray of sunshine.” Bloody Disgusting has released an exclusive M3GAN featurette in advance of the movie’s January 6 release. It features the cast, crew, and director of the upcoming horror movie as well as their opinions on the doll, who may unseat Chucky and Anabelle as the scariest dolls in the horror genre.

The featurette began with M3GAN introducing herself, then moved on to the cast of the movie, Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng, and Jen Van Epps, as well as director Gerard Johnstone and M3GAN producers Jason Blum and James Wan. All of them had nothing but good things to say, describing the lifelike doll as “intense and iconic,” while also being “strange and constantly unsettling.” After all, M3GAN is initially a prototype robot made to ease the stress of Gemma (Williams) unexpectedly taking care of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (McGraw).

M3GAN is designed to care for children, but when Cady unexpectedly became her own “primary user,” the artificial intelligence expanded the parameters of her responsibilities and started to protect the young girl at all costs, even if that meant killing anyone who may be a threat to her.

With movies like Smile, Fresh, and Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, among other 2022 horror offerings that offered a distinct perspective on the genre, it’s easy to say that 2022 was a terrific year for horror. But 2023 doesn’t look to be any different, as the year begins with M3GAN, another anticipated horror smash. Given the competence in the genre possessed by the cast and crew of the movie, that assertion is not without merit. The horror of The Conjuring, Insidious, and Malignant was created by Wan, and Anabelle and The Boy were brought to life by Blumhouse Productions.

In contrast, Williams—who not only plays the title role in the movie but also serves as its executive producer—has appeared in acclaimed horror movies like Get Out and The Perfection. So, with horror industry experts working together, M3GAN is already dancing her way to success.

M3GAN’s violent and gruesome nature will earn it a PG-13 rating. While this is disheartening for fans of horror, there are certain horror movies that did well even without the “Rated R” designation, such as the Blumhouse-produced Happy Death Day movies.

When you consider that the next movie exploits technology to bring dread to the big screen, Blum’s claim that everyone will have to disconnect all of their devices in the featurette makes sense.
