‘M3GAN’ doll gives bullies a painful earful in new clip
The movie about a stylish AI companion who becomes evil hits theatres...
M3GAN writer Akela teases the unrated, “Way Gorier” version
M3GAN from Universal and Blumhouse promises to frighten viewers in horrifyingly frightening ways. The protagonist of the novel is the titular AI companion doll, which was created by Gemma, a brilliant roboticist, and gifted to her 8-year-old orphaned niece as a prototype. But M3GAN goes awry, according to all the scary doll stories. The narrative was co-written by the master of horror James Wan and longtime associate Akela Cooper, who has previously worked with him on films like Malignant and the upcoming The Nun 2. Cooper discussed scripting a significantly bloodier version of the film in a recent interview with the news.
Interestingly, M3GAN received a PG-13 rating despite having a killer doll plotline, making it appealing to a far younger audience for the genre. The viral dancing doll video has been an interesting part of the movie’s marketing. A group of dancing M3GANs welcomed the crowds at the movie’s world premiere last month. Everything simply increased the spectators’ excitement. “No shade to Universal, love them, and I get that once the trailer went viral, teens got involved and you want them to be able to watch it,” Cooper said in reference to the film’s rating.
The author acknowledges that a far bloodier version of the film did make it into the original script, nonetheless. At some point, there needs to be an unrated version. I have heard that it is recorded. Yet it was significantly grimmer. “Her body count in the script was larger than in the movie,” she continued. She did kill a lot more people, albeit it wasn’t carnage on the scale of Gabriel [in Malignant]. She continued, “There were a few characters that James was like, ‘I admire what you accomplished with those folks, but I want them to live. I was cruel, but then again, that’s me. My sense of humor is rather dark.
Horror enthusiasts are already frightened by M3GAN based on the promotional materials for the film. We won’t truly know how terrifying the film is until it opens in theatres. In the film, Allison Williams plays Gemma, Violet McGraw plays her orphaned niece Cady, Amie Donald plays M3GAN, and Jenna Davis provides M3GAN’s voice. Ronny Chieng, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Lori Dungey, Arlo Green, Jen Van Epps, and Stephane Garneau-Monten complete the cast.
