She described her first encounter with the 67-year-old EGOT winner, who was shooting the film in her Montgomery, Alabama, hometown, as “quite fantastic, actually.”

She recalled the crucial piece of advice Goldberg gave her, noting that “[I] just was ready to move to Hollywood to work on films soon after the movie was completed.” “Hollywood will always exist, Whoopi added. Obtain a degree.”

Spencer continued, “My mum was pretty much into school. She was hoping her daughter would end up being an attorney.”

A few years later, when Spencer received her English degree from Auburn University, Goldberg’s brother—who was also involved in The Long Walk Home’s production—”made sure to let me know that Whoopi was thinking of me and that she was all thrilled that I was graduating,” Spencer recalled.

“It was so crazy,” Spencer said.
