The world of R.J. Palacio’s original novel was enlarged when the White Bird: A Wonder Story trailer, the spin-off sequel/prequel to Stephen Chbosky’s 2017 film Wonder, was published last year. Lionsgate has now confirmed that it will instead enter theatres this August, even though the movie was initially scheduled to debut in 2022.

The Wonder companion movie will undoubtedly draw a throng to theatres this August given that Wonder earned $305 million worldwide at the box office and that Palacio has sold more than 16 million copies of his books, with editions available in 47 different languages. Julian (Bryce Gheisar, Walk the Prank), the major antagonist in Wonder, struggles to find a place in society after being expelled from his previous school for abusing Auggie Pullman in White Bird (Jacob Tremblay, Room and Before I Wake).

Julian’s grandmother (played by seasoned actor Helen Mirren) shares her own courageous journey in an effort to change Julian’s perspective on the world. She was saved from certain death by a classmate (Orlando Schwerdt, Children of the Corn) and his family when she was a little girl living in Nazi-occupied France. While the boy’s mother (Gillian Anderson, Sex Education, and The X Files) risks everything to keep her safe, they experience their first love in a fantastical world they have created.

Olivia Ross (The Old Guard), Ariella Glaser (Radioactive), and Ishai Golan complete the cast of White Bird (Mindbender). The movie was directed by Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Christopher Robin), who wrote the screenplay for A Man Called Otto. White Bird is a heartwarming story that continues the concepts of the first film by showing how one act of kindness may have an enduring impact. In fact, to develop educational programming centered around the movie, Lionsgate and Participant are working with the USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education.

Todd Lieberman for Mandeville Films and David Hoberman are among the producers of White Bird. Palacio is also involved in the production of White Bird alongside Todd Lieberman for Mandeville Films and David Hoberman. Additionally serving as executive producers on the picture are Participant Jeff Skoll, Mandeville Films’ Alexander Young, and 2DUX2’s Renée Wolfe. Additional executive producers include Mark Bomback, Kevan Van Thompson, and Robert Kessel.
