Angela Bassett wins at Critics Choice Awards
Forever Angela Bassett! At the 2023 Critics' Choice Awards on Sunday night,...
Angela Bassett alludes to Ariana DeBose’s popular BAFTAs song
Angela Bassett joins in on the enjoyment. The 64-year-old actress won entertainer of the year at the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday, and when she ascended the stage to take the medal, she made a reference to a phrase from Ariana DeBose’s popular rap from the 2023 BAFTA Awards.
The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actress jokingly remarked, “I assume Angela Bassett did the thing.”
Other people Bassett praised in her address included Spike Lee, John Singleton, Betty Shabazz, and Malcolm X. She also said that appreciation is the universe’s way of letting us know that we are not alone in this world, according to Deadline.
Bassett didn’t just mention DeBose’s performance in his acceptance speech either. On the NAACP Image Awards red carpet, the actress revealed to Variety that she DM’d the 32-year-old actress not long after her BAFTAs moment went viral.
Bassett said, “It was wonderful, it was beautiful, it was amazing.” “You know, I just wanted to make sure she was alright. Mostly due to the volume of attention.”
The Oscar-winning West Side Story actress DeBose performed a rap in honour of this year’s female nominees at the London awards ceremony last Sunday. She included lines like, “Angela Bassett did the thing / Viola Davis, my Woman King / Blanchett, Cate, you’re a genius / And Jamie Lee, you are all of us.”
DeBose later came under fire and criticism for the performance on social media, however the awards show’s producer claimed that the audience members applauded the routine. DeBose also sang the songs “We Are Family” and “Sisters Are Doing It for Themselves” as part of her showcase.
To be really honest, I believe it’s very unjust, said producer Nick Bullen to Variety. “The songs she was singing are really well-known tunes, and as she sang them, the audience applauded and appeared to be dancing. It’s been a fantastic year for women in film, so we wanted to honour that with the rap section in the middle that mentioned the ladies present.”
DeBose has subsequently spoken out about the reaction to her popular song, telling Zoe Ball in a clip from this week’s BBC Radio 2 Morning Show that she had a “blast” during the performance.
In a footage of the interview posted on TikTok on Saturday, DeBose stated after Ball claimed she liked the performance, “You know what, you might be one of the few.” “I’ll take it, you’re my folks,” she said.
Ball also described the performance as “a lady singing and dancing, being wonderful praising women,” which was exactly what DeBose “wanted to achieve,” according to her.
“To be completely honest, I’m not like, “Hey BAFTA, let me in!” Believe it or not, they actually called me “DeBose declared. “However, that was the task. When someone said, “Come celebrate ladies,” I said, “Sure!” It was fun that we did that. I had a great time, I won’t lie.”
“I spent the remainder of the evening, you know, cutting a rug, because [it was] so great. Which, are you saying that here? Emma Thompson and I are cutting a rug, “She went on to talk about dancing with the actress. “That was wonderful. I enjoyed myself a lot.”
DeBose revealed that Thompson had fans in the audience, including Baz Luhrmann, after the host and the actress concurred that Thompson “had the moves” as a dancer herself. “”No, I think you’re terrific, that was fun,” he said. I enjoyed it. I said, “Work,” “She spoke. “You guys have won with it. And it appears that gay Twitter liked it? I’ll accept it since that’s excellent. You know, my people.”
In a video posted earlier this week on TikTok, Broadway music director Benjamin Rauhala showed DeBose practicing the show’s now-famous opening number while getting her makeup done and a dress fitted.
“Giving love to all of these legendary women and kicking off the celebration was an honour. We are laughing at everyone who is singing our silly little ditty in their head “The video features captions by Rauhala.
Rauhala concluded by saying, “Thank you for the love and the humorous memes. “We had SO MUCH FUN putting this together for our BAFTAS buddies. Such an occasion! She completed the action.”
