Mike Myers was inspired by Burt Bacharach to Create the “Austin Powers” film series
A crucial part was played by Burt Bacharach in the classic Austin Powers movie series. The renowned songwriter passed away on Wednesday, and his collection of appearances recently came to light once more. The artist was adored for his cameos in the Austin Powers film series, even though his best-known songs were “Walk on By,” “Do You Know the Way to San Jose,” and “I Say a Little Prayer.”
It turns out that he had a bigger part than just a brief cameo in those flicks. According to Entertainment Weekly, Mike Myers had the inspiration for Austin Powers while on the way home from hockey practise after hearing his song “The Look of Love.”
“Did I come to that conclusion logically? No, he said, adding that Austin had a “increased libido” and was a “shag machine.”
The national anthem of libido, “The Look of Love,” and the question, “Where have all the swingers gone?” led him to this conclusion, he added.
Bacharach appeared in various cameos across the entire series. He sings with Elvis Costello in International Man of Mystery’s “What the World Needs Now Is Love” and The Spy Who Shagged Me’s “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” (whom he often collaborated with). Then, during the Austin Powers in Goldmember end credits, he made an appearance.
The iconic scene in International Man of Mystery occurs in the middle of the movie, as Powers is having trouble adjusting to the 1990s after travelling through time. He catches up on events since his time period in the 1960s as Bacharach’s song starts to play.
Then, as he and Elizabeth Hurley’s character travel down the Las Vegas Strip, he addresses the crowd as “Ladies and gentlemen… Mr. Burt Bacharach.” The performer plays the song on the piano while dressed in a tux.
On Thursday, Austin Powers director Jay Roach remembered the last moment of the movie with Bacharach and paid respect to the late musician.
Burt Bacharach repeatedly played “What the World Needs Now Is Love” while seated at a piano on top of a double-decker bus travelling up and down the Las Vegas Strip, while Mike and Elizabeth danced, according to Roach, who spoke with the Los Angeles Times.
