Nicolas Cage on Bringing Back Dracula in “Renfield”
It won’t be long before fans get to see Nicolas Cage in all his murderous splendour in the upcoming horror comedy Renfield. Spring is just around the horizon. The actor recently discussed his role as Dracula in an interview with Total Film. He claimed that the job presented several difficulties because of the character’s lengthy filmic history.
Cage told Total Film that the idea of Dracula was challenging in and of itself. “That has already been carried out so frequently. Both very nicely and poorly done versions of it exist. Certainly, I have admiration for Gary [Oldman], Frank Langella, Bela Lugosi, and Christopher Lee. But I was curious to see if I could give the character anything new. Moreover, I kind of always knew I had to do it eventually.”
In addition to his most recent remarks, Cage has previously said that Max Schreck’s portrayal of Count Orlok in the 1922 silent horror classic Nosferatu served as his physical influence. Despite wanting to portray the character in an original way, Cage admitted to Total Film that he also channeled the late Christopher Lee, who is well known for playing the Count in Hammer’s Dracula series. Lee’s portrayal served as the inspiration for Cage’s interpretation of the part.
In terms of his speaking style, “I went back to Christopher Lee, but that was really simply a starting point,” he continued. “I recognized Christopher. He and I were in a brief scene together in Season of the Witch, and I really liked him. He and I had many pleasant discussions, and he reminded me a lot of my father, August. My father afterwards served as my primary source of motivation.”
The role of Cage as Dracula could be a major highlight for the movie and solidify him as the most recent in a long line of iconic actors who have solidified the character’s place in popular culture. Cage draws inspiration from various iconic portrayals of the vampire while also attempting to offer audiences a fresh take supported by the comedy’s premise.
With so many Dracula adaptations having graced the silver screen over the past century, there is undoubtedly no shortage of Dracula movies; however, the upcoming movie will focus on Nicholas Hoult’s titular servant, who decides to start a new life after falling in love with a traffic cop played by Awkwafina. Renfield, which frightens viewers in theatres this April, may be the ideal adaption because it combines traditional horror with a comic touch.
