A bell is ringing. Creed III’s Super Bowl trailer has arrived, and it’s powerful. Michael B. Jordan returns to the boxing classic in its third sequel as Adonis “Donnie” Creed, Rocky Balboa’s (Sylvester Stallone) best buddy and the son of boxing great Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). Just a few weeks before the movie’s March premiere, a brand-new trailer debuted, bringing fresh fire to the ring.

In the most recent intense episode, Donnie, who is now incredibly prosperous, feels a new fire in his belly after being faced by a ghost from his past. Damian Andersen, Donnie’s former closest friend who recently left prison, enters the scene with a bang (Jonathan Majors). Donnie, who warmly welcomes Damian into his gym, is unaware that it is not at all what he believes to be a brotherly reunion. Behind the scenes, Damian is consumed with retaliation and driven to reclaim the life he feels his ex-friend stole from him.

But given the numerous references to the duo’s “unfinished business,” it is obvious that things aren’t nearly that straightforward. If there were any doubts about their rivalry taking center stage in this movie, there is also a thrilling build-up to an epic showdown between the two in which they square off in a fierce fight inside the ring. Damian clearly delivers some fresh tricks that even put Donnie, a champion fighter with a lot of experience, on the defensive.

Creed III, which leans on themes of devotion, loss, and betrayal, seems to continue the Rocky torch with vigour, hitting the same emotional chords that the legendary franchise struck so masterfully over the course of its six-film run. This is particularly illustrated by Donnie’s apparent desire to preserve the legacy he has created by honoring both his father and Rocky. With a series of impressive training montages that highlight how much more is at stake for both of them than just a title, the trailer exudes new energy. This obviously involves Donnie’s family and legacy. Damian’s internalized right to the life he believes he deserves is what drives him in the meanwhile.

Jordan will make his directorial debut with Creed III, promising that it’s “not just your standard boxing movie,” leaving his mark on the series. The emotional undertone of the trailer, which screams of deep-seated suffering for both main characters, makes this clear. Jordan already discussed how he took this into consideration while filming the movie in an IMAX featurette. We really wanted to capitalize on the characters’ emotional journeys, throw them into the ring, and have it pay off physically, he said. Creed III is undoubtedly going to be a strong competitor to its predecessors.
