A long time in the making, the critically acclaimed 2016 movie Zootopia will soon have a sequel. During Disney’s Q1 earnings call, Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, broke the news. When Zootopia first came out, it generated over $1 billion at the box office worldwide, and a sequel seemed almost inevitable. But until now, seven years later, there was no formal confirmation.

Zootopia is not the only lauded animated film receiving attention from Disney for a sequel. Iger indicated that there will also be Toy Story and Frozen sequels. “Today I’m so happy to announce that our animation studios are working on sequels to some of our most well-known brands, including Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia. Soon, we’ll be able to talk more about these productions. But this is an excellent illustration of how we’re leveraging our unrivalled brands and franchises, according to Iger.

The cast of 2016’s Zootopia received praise in addition to its endearing plot. The voice work of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Jenny Slate, J. K. Simmons, Octavia Spencer, Alan Tudyk, Idris Elba, and Shakira worked in favour of the animated movie. The brilliant cast was completed by Bonnie Hunt, Nate Torrence, Don Lake, and Tommy Chong. Which members of the main cast will return for the sequel is still unknown.

It’s fantastic to learn that the Zootopia universe will continue to grow. In a previous installment of Zootopia+, Disney followed three groups of characters from the original movie: the gangster Shrews, the Tiger dancers, and the Sloths. To the joy of fans, the six-episode series, which debuted in November 2022, was a lighthearted and entertaining addition to the franchise. On the streaming service, Zootopia+ was not the first of its sort. I Am Groot, a series with a similar premise that debuted on Disney+ in August 2022, followed the MCU character through five lauded brief episodes.

Zootopia, a novel entry in the buddy-cop genre, was praised for its brilliance and considerate treatment of its subject matter. It was directed by Jared Bush. According to Collider’s own review, “Zootopia comes out as a film that’s not just a delight to see, but also one with a message that couldn’t feel more pertinent right now,” thanks to its witty, sympathetic characters, amusing humour, and honest feeling. The movie was described as “rich, deep, and textured in a way you would rarely expect from a family film” in the review as well. With such high praise, it is simple to understand why anticipation for the new series is practically tangible.

Although a release date for the sequel has not yet been announced, it will be intriguing to watch where the tale goes next in the film.
