Seth Rogen recently talked about how “devastating” poor reviews are and how movie critics might not be considering the individuals involved when they are criticizing a product during an appearance on The Diary of a CEO Podcast with host Steven Bartlett.

“I think most reviewers would think twice about the way they write these things if they understood how much it hurts the individuals who made the stuff they are writing about,” Rogen remarked. “It’s devastating. Honestly, I know folks who have suffered from it for years or even decades and never fully healed.”

Said he, “It’s quite private. When you are told by an institution that your own expression is terrible, it is devastating, and I understand why individuals take it with them for the rest of their lives. It is truly awful.”

Rogen continued by delving into his own personal experience after 2011’s The Green Hornet, a superhero comedy in which he co-starred with Jay Chou and Cameron Diaz, earned negative reviews. The final Rotten Tomatoes score for that movie was 44 percent.

The Green Hornet reviews had just been released, and they were not good, according to Rogen. “Everyone despised it. Everybody was enjoying how much they disliked it.”

He went on, “But, it made a $35 million opening weekend, which at the time was the highest opening weekend I had ever been a part of. It performed admirably. It is sometimes what is nice. You might occasionally cling to a feeling of accomplishment.”

Rogen went on to say that he was even more depressed when the critics attacked his comedy The Interview from 2014, in which he co-starred with James Franco. He said that it seemed “more personal” because they were criticizing his artistic judgment.

“That felt considerably more intimate,” Rogen added. “Green Hornet had the impression that I had been a large fancy thing’s victim. That was not so much a creative failure on our part but a conceptual one. People treated us poorly during the interview, and it was awful.”

For Rogen, treating himself to a good meal or spending time at his beach house frequently helped to lessen the impact of harsh criticism. Yet as any actor can understand, continuing to work is the best way to recover, according to the Fabelmans actor.

Life moves on, and that’s another odd thing about creating movies, he remarked. “It’s funny how you can be working on a different film when your [current] one is failing. It’s sour and sweet. Everything will be fine, you know. You are currently at work. You don’t need to worry if your concern is that the movie will fail and you won’t be employed again. Yet occasionally, it presents an emotional dilemma.”
