According to the preliminary research suggestions, an antiseptic nasal spray containing povidone-iodine may stop the spread of coronavirus.

A team of ear, nose, and throat doctors found in test-tube experiments that a nasal spray containing a povidone-iodine has deactivated the coronavirus within 15 seconds. According to the research, the nasal spray used by the doctors is usually used to disinfect the inside of the nose before surgery.

In JAMA Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the doctors reported that they allow their patients to use the nasal spray before intranasal procedures, in order to stop the spread of coronavirus.

They also suggest the patients apply the nasal spray before coming for their appointments to “further decrease intranasal viral load and … prevent spread in waiting areas and other common areas.”

However, the doctors have cautioned the people that the daily use of the nasal spray containing povidone-iodine is not safe for everyone, especially pregnant women and thyroid conditions’ patients.

The researchers said that,

“Larger clinical trials have not yet proved that viral transmission is curbed by intranasal povidone-iodine solutions, but these studies are already underway,”
