Japanese researchers have discovered the need for frequent hand washing to battle the Covid-19 pandemic. Experts say the virus remains active on the skin for up to nine hours.

The infectious agent causing the flu survives on human skin for nearly 1.8 hours as reported by the Clinical Infectious Diseases journal.

“The nine-hour survival of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus strain that causes Covid-19) on human skin may increase the risk of contact transmission in comparison with IAV (influenza A virus), thus accelerating the pandemic,” the journal read.

The research group tested skin collected from autopsy samples a day after death.

The coronavirus and flu virus can both be halted to cause further destruction by applying ethanol, which is what hand sanitizers are comprised of.

World Health Organization recommends regular and thorough hand washing to minimize the transmission of the virus which has contaminated around 40 million people globally since it first came into being in China last year.
