India: Teen girl raped and set ablaze by her uncle

An 18-year-old girl was set ablaze after being raped by her own paternal uncle in India’s Fatehpur district.

According to Police officials, the victim said in a statement that she was alone in her home on Saturday noon, her 22-year-old raped her amid she started screaming, her uncle her uncle sprinkled kerosene on her and set her on fire.

The girl has been shifted to Hallet hospital in Kanpur for treatment, the official added.

Earlier this month, Indian police shot dead four suspects of  rape and murder of young Indian veterinarian in an encounter in Telangana.

Indian media reported that the police claimed that all four culprits were trying to escape during investigations at the spot where the woman’s body was found.

The four men had been taken to the scene of the crime at 3 am for a reconstruction, the police said.

They were at the spot near a bridge where the charred body of the woman was found, around 50 km from Hyderabad. During the investigation visit, when, one of the men signaled to the others, possibly to escape, police claimed.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said it will send a team led by a senior police officer to Telangana to investigate the matter. The team will give a report soon.

After news of the killings spread, the victim’s mother told media, “justice has been done”, while her neighbours celebrated with firecrackers, and thousands of people took to the streets to hail the police.

A huge crowd gathered on the bridge overlooking the spot and flashed thumbs-up signs at the police, some also sprinkle flowers on them.
