62 people drowned off the coast of Mauritania in one of the disastrous tragedies this year among people trying to make the death-defying journey to Europe.

According to details, the boat that left from West Africa country Gambia on November 27 had been carrying at least 150 people, including women and children. It was headed toward the Canary Islands located in the Atlantic Ocean, when it tried to approach the Mauritanian coast to get fuel and food where that unfortunate incident occurred.

Chief of mission in the West African nation with the U.N. migration agency, Laura Lungarotti stated “62 is the new figure of migrants drowned close to the Mauritania coast and 85 the migrants who survived. Majority of Gambians and few Senegalese. Both national and consular authorities fully cooperating with IOM staff providing assistance.”
