Third general elections to be held in Israel

Third general elections in a year are going to be organized in Israel.

Politicians did not succeed in making the majority union in the parliament.

According to international media sources, the new general elections are expected to be on March 2nd.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his opponent Benny Gantz failed to agree on a power-sharing agreement.

Both the leaders had a tough competition in the last elections that were held in September. But they failed to protect majorities after the elections.

Benjamin Netanyahu was accused with charges of corruption in November, such legal issues became hindrances to talks and settlements.

Benny Gantz had requested that he pledges not to avail of parliamentary immunity from prosecution as a requirement for negotiations.

From the 120-member Knesset, Benny Gantz’s both blue and white alliance had gotten 33 seats. Whereas Netanyahu’s right-wing party had won 32 seats in the September elections.

President Reuven Rivlin had asked them to make national unity government as none of the parties managed to ally to lead the 61-seat majority.

However, it became a debate about who will become Prime Minister first. Netanyahu insisted that ultra-Orthodox parties collided to him be included. In addition to this, Gantz refused to work under the leadership if a Prime Minister having criminal charges.

It should be remembered that Benjamin Netanyahu was accused of bribery, corruption, and breach of trust by the attorney general in three cases. However, the PM has denied such charges and explained them as an “attempted coup”, accusing them of “spoiled” procedure.
