Ramadan the holy month of fasting, spiritual reflection and prayers has begun amid the worldwide lockdown. Muslims around the world observing Ramadan by fasting under lockdown.

Mosques don’t just host daily free iftar (the meal eaten after sunset). They host fundraisers, mixers and lectures, all an integral part of the celebration. Following most iftars, Muslims go to the mosque for a communal prayer that can only be done during Ramadan, tarawih.

But this year, Covid-19 will rob millions of Muslims across the US from congregating for prayers, iftar and other Ramadan customs.

Saudi Arabia:

In Indian Capital Delhi, One non-profit has found a way to connect the community, as Ramadan begins under lockdown with no gatherings at mosques allowed.

“We thought let’s give ourselves an alternative – let’s give out ration kits to families in need,” Irtiza Quraishi of the Marham non-profit said.

In addition to this Volunteers will aim to deliver around 200 kits every night. Filled with essentials like wheat, rice and lentils, each kit weighs 18kg and is enough for a family of three or four to survive for a month, Mr Quraishi said.
