Turkey’s presidential spokesperson said that Turkey is adamantly opposed to partition in Libya be it in principle or by law.

Ibrahim Kalin said while giving an interview to the international news source, “We are absolutely against the breaking up of Libya, whether in reality, or on the map, or politically or geographically,” “That will be a devastating scenario. We have seen similar cases in Iraq, in Syria, in other places. We should draw lessons from that,”

He also said that the Turkish government will keep supporting the UN-recognized Government of National Accord. He accused renegade general Khalifa Haftar of sowing “havoc” in Libya.

“He has tried to push his way, and he is trying to divide or take control of Libya with no legitimacy at all,” he said, adding Haftar has “violated every single agreement, ceasefire, or peace process over the last two years.”

Libya has been caught up in strife since NATO operations led to the overthrow of former dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011.

Libya’s new government was founded four years in 2015 under the UN-led agreement. But a military offensive by renegade general Khalifa Haftar’s forces led to the failure of long-term political settlement.

Haftar’s forces have attacked the Libyan capital of Tripoli and other parts of northwestern Libya since April 2019. It resulted in more than 1,000 deaths, including civilians. Turkey backs the UN-recognized government whereas Haftar is supported by the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Russia.
