Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is likely to suspend the UK’s extradition treaty with Hong Kong as tensions between the UK and China prevails.

The announcement comes after the UK decides to ban Chinese company Huawei from its 5G network.
China has accused the UK of interfering in its internal matters.

Mr. Raab will likely to make a statement to Parliament later.

According to the international news agency, if someone in Hong Kong is suspected of a crime in the UK, then the British authorities can ask Hong Kong to hand them over to face justice – and vice versa. The extradition treaty is based on this rule.

The UK, US, and EU have accused China of undermines “One Country, Two Systems”, which has guaranteed a high degree of autonomy for Hong Kong since it was handed back to Chinese rule in 1997.

On the other hand, China’s ambassador to the UK has warned Britain against stationing a new aircraft carrier in the Pacific, saying it would be a “very dangerous move”.

China’s top envoy in the UK Liu Xiaoming said to an international newspaper that it should not “gang up with the United States on the Chinese” with military deployments as London cuts trading ties with the European Union this year.

He told The Times, “After Brexit, I think the UK still wants to play an important role in the world,”

“That is not the way to play an important role.”
