A state of disaster has been declared in Australia’s Victoria, with the local government implementing a night curfew as part of its harshest movement restrictions to date to contain the coronavirus.

According to the details, State Premier Daniel Andrews said that the new restrictions, to be in place for six weeks until mid-September, will allow only one person per household to go shopping once a day.

Melbourne residents will not be able to go further than five kilometres (three miles) from home.

The state of disaster declaration “means that police and others have additional powers”, Andrews said. “We can suspend various acts of the parliament and make sure that we get the job done and there’s no question about the enforce-ability and the way in which new rules will operate.”

Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales, faces a “high alert” as it attempts to contain the coronavirus. Its premier has urged people to wear masks on public transport and while shopping.
