While mass whale strandings occur relatively often in Tasmania, such a large group has not been seen in the area for more than a decade.

The last mass stranding off the coast of Tasmania was reported in 2009 when 200 whales beached themselves.

In 2018, more than 100 pilot whales died after beaching off the coast of New Zealand.
