On Friday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador appointed the nation’s first and only female minister of defense to lead the campaign against drug dealers and other lawbreakers.

Since Alfonso Durazo withdrew from the position of the governor of the Sonora State, Lopez Obrador proposed the seat to Rosa Icela Rodriguez, who currently manages seaports and merchant shipping.

Rodriguez, a former journalist and close partner of Lopez Obrador, has not yet officially acknowledged the seat as she is regaining health from the COVID-19, detailed the president.

In July, Lopez Obrador placed Rodriguez responsible for managing the ports as part of the plan to tackle drug cartels, smugglers, and trade fraud.

As Security Minister, in a country ravaged by organized crime and cartel terrorism, she will undertake one of the most difficult positions in the Cabinet.
