After the Indian government allowed Ayurveda practitioners to perform minor surgeries, around a million doctors went on a day-long strike to protest against the decision.

According to the details, thousands of non-critical operations and routine consultations were set to be disrupted across India and the umbrella body for all surgeons and conventional doctors announced to suspend work and went to protest for 12 hours.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA)head, Rajan Sharma said,

“All non-essential consultations and surgeries from morning until evening on Friday were suspended,” adding that the protest would not affect any corona patient.

“The government’s decision to bring in a rule that allows practitioners in specified streams of Ayurveda to be trained to perform surgical procedures trivializes the medical profession,” said Sharma.

It is pertinent to mention here that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government last month had allowed the Ayurveda practitioners (post-graduate) to perform certain surgeries.

39 general surgery procedures and around 19 procedures involving the eye, ear, nose, and throat were listed in the notification.

IMA had written against the new rules to the government but did not receive any response yet.
