A New York Army National Guard helicopter on a routine training mission crashed in Rochester on Wednesday evening, leaving three Guard members dead, the authorities said.

According to the details, the crash happened in Mendon, about 17 miles south of Rochester, the military said.

All three soldiers killed were men. Their families were being informed, sources said.

“This is a heavy, heavy burden upon all of us,” said Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter.

“These are our freedom providers… just showing again that freedom is not free. We lost three great Americans today in the service of our country.”

Moreover, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement he was “devastated” by the soldiers’ deaths.

“National Guard members are our citizen soldiers who voluntarily serve and protect both here and abroad, and I extend prayers and condolences from all New Yorkers to the family, loved ones and fellow soldiers of these honorable heroes who we will never forget.”

The governor directed flags on all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff Thursday to honor the victims.
