The president of a local football club and four players lost their lives in a plane crash in South American country Brazil on Sunday.

According to details, the president of the fourth division club Palmas and the four players were travelling in connection with a local championship match. The small plane flew from the Tocantins to Guyana (about 800 km) but crashed a few minutes after takeoff. The pilot of the plane was also killed in the crash.

The Brazilian Football Confederation has confirmed the postponement of the tournament.

In 2016, 71 people were killed in a plane crash in Colombia. The dead included 19 players from the Brazilian football club Chapecoense. The players were on their way to Madeleine to play a match.

During the flight, the plane was reported to have a technical malfunction by the pilot near the city of Madeleine, after which it lost contact with the control towers at 11:15 pm local time. The plane then crashed into a mountainous area outside the city.

Three of the six survivors are footballers. They include Alan Rochelle, Helio Zampier and goalkeeper Jackson Fulman.

Goalkeeper Marcos Padilla, also known as Danilo, was pulled alive from the rubble but died at the hospital.

Six of the 21 journalists on board worked for Fox Sports Brazil and other global media outlets.
