US President Joe Biden has warned to put back sanctions on Myanmar after the country’s military detained leader Aung San Suu Ki.

Sanctions were recently eased as the country got rid of prolong dictatorship.

According to the international news agency, the military had refused to accept November’s election results. It has announced a long-term state of emergency.

US President Joe Biden said in a statement, “force should never seek to overrule the will of the people or attempt to erase the outcome of a credible election”.

The US had removed sanctions as Myanmar implemented democracy. Mr. Biden said this would be urgently reviewed, adding, “The United States will stand up for democracy wherever it is under attack.”

However, Toe Zaw Latt, Myanmar bureau chief of the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), told the international news agency that the military will know sanctions are an unavoidable consequence of their actions, adding that “they don’t care about Western sanctions” and are more concerned “about how China, Japan, South Korea respond”.

The UN, the UK, and the EU have condemned the detention.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the military’s move a “serious blow to democratic reforms”, as the Security Council prepared for an emergency meeting. The UN has demanded the release of at least 45 detained people.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Union leaders condemned the detention.
