On Friday morning, Palestinian protesters and Israeli police clashed at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound.

“Seven injured people were taken to hospital to be treated for upper body injuries,” a Palestinian Red Crescent member told AFP.

Witnesses said Palestinian protestors threw stones at Israeli security forces, who responded with rubber bullets.

Al-Aqsa is a Muslim holy site. Jews call it the Temple Mount after two ancient temples said to have stood there.

The compound is located in Israeli-occupied east Jerusalem.

Last Ramadan, clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians visiting the mosque compound triggered an 11-day war between Israel and Gaza’s Islamist rulers, Hamas.

This year, Israel and Jordan, the custodian of holy sites in east Jerusalem, intensified talks to avoid similar violence.

The violence on Friday comes after three weeks of simmering tensions in Israel.

Several attacks have shocked Israel, some carried out by Israeli Arabs inspired or linked to the Islamic State, others by Palestinians backed by militant groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Since March 22, four attacks have killed 14 people, including a shooting spree in Bnei Brak, an Orthodox Jewish city in greater Tel Aviv, by a Palestinian attacker from Jenin.

During that time, 21 Palestinians were killed, including assailants who targeted Israelis, according to AFP.
