Earth Day protests will take place in East Africa today.

This year has seen major climate protests led by youth and Indigenous communities. On March 25, youth climate activists worldwide joined the Fridays for Future demonstration.

Thousands of demonstrators in Brazil demanded an end to the Amazon’s degradation.

Climate campaigners like Vanessa Nakate have highlighted the 900-mile East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline.

The pipeline will transport roughly 70 million barrels of oil per year from Uganda to Tanzania. Proximity to Africa’s largest lake, Lake Victoria, is a major problem as it supplies water to millions.

Activists have already urged stakeholders to stop funding the project.

Activism against environmental degradation and climate change will be fierce across East Africa, particularly in Uganda and Tanzania.

Following HSBC, BNP Paribas, and Swiss Re, other banks and insurers are likely to withdraw from the highly contentious project.

The East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline is still in the planning stages, thus violence seems unlikely.
