In telephone conversations with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohamed Al-Sabah on Wednesday, Foreign Minister of Japan Hayashi Yoshimasa reiterated his country’s strong collaboration with Kuwait.

“Kuwait is a solid partner of Japan, and the two countries have traditionally assisted one another during times of adversity such as the Gulf War and the Great East Japan Earthquake,” minister Hayashi said during the 20-minute meeting, according to the Japanese foreign ministry.

Hayashi said that he want to work with Minister Ahmad to further develop Japan’s tight bilateral ties with Kuwait.

Minister Ahmad responded by stating that Japan and Kuwait had maintained a good connection throughout the years, exemplified by their cooperation during the Gulf War, and he expressed a desire for that friendship to continue.

On the Ukrainian crisis, the two nations had opposing positions, with Hayashi denouncing Russia and his Kuwaiti colleague, Minister Ahmad, condemning “acts that violate international law and the United Nations Charter,” according to a ministry statement.

The two ministers discussed the escalating price of crude oil in the aftermath of the Ukraine crisis. Minister Hayashi expressed thanks for Kuwait’s consistent supply of crude oil to Japan and expressed optimism that Kuwait would continue to play a leadership role in stabilizing the world oil market.

Kuwait, as a member of OPEC and OPEC Plus, is responsible for stabilizing the international oil market, and Kuwait is willing to respond appropriately to the situation, Minister Ahmad stated.

Japan imported 6.68 million barrels of crude oil from Kuwait in February 2022, accounting for 8.5% of total crude imports, and Japanese companies are expected to increase their imports from Kuwait and other Middle Eastern countries.
