CONSERVATIVE MPs in Cornwall have pushed back at opponents who claim the county will get less than half the funds it would have received from the European Union without Brexit.

It was confirmed last week Cornwall will receive £132million over the next three years from the Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) (SPF). The fund is said to offer the replacement funds that Cornwall would have received if Britain had stayed in the EU.

As one of the poorest regions in the UK, Cornwall was expected to receive the funds to make up for any loss after Brexit.

It has been projected the county would have earned £100million a year from the EU had Britain remained in the bloc, Cornwall Live said.

The latest budget proposal has been criticized by critics who say the plans will see Cornwall receive less than half of the funds it would have received without Brexit.

A number of local councils have accused the Government of violating assurances Cornwall would get the same or more than they would have received after Brexit, and failing to make good on its leveling-up plan.

Independent councilor Tim Dwelly said: “When the Government committed absolutely to match Cornwall’s EU money (£100m a year) some people fell for it.

“Others like me anticipated it wouldn’t happen. We could see how little was allotted in the budgets.

“Now Cornwall is to get just £129.5million over three years from the new Shared Prosperity Fund.
