In Newcastle, County Down, a man was kidnapped and doused in fuel by two guys who threatened to set him on fire if he did not give them money.

On Sunday evening, the victim, who is in his forties, was kidnapped from King Street in Newcastle and transported to a car park in Oldtown Road, Annalong.

According to police, no money was handed over during the attack, but the victim was “understandably scared.”

They are also looking into another assault on a guy in his 70s. The senior was assaulted on Newcastle’s King Street around 21:30 BST on Sunday during an attempted burglary at his residence.

The suspect was unable to gain entry into the property and fled the scene. After 21:00 BST, the kidnapping on King Street was reported to authorities. Police investigating the incidents apprehended two individuals, ages 31 and 36, who are still being held in prison.

According to a victim’s neighbour, officers remained at the scene of the Newcastle incident into the early hours of the morning.

“I woke up this morning at about ten to two when there was an orange flashing light and I could hear a loud lorry,” Martin Smith told BBC News NI.

“I looked out the window and saw a recovery truck. There was police around and it went on for about an hour and a half, maybe more.

“I went back to bed. The truck went away and the police were still here up until about, I don’t know, maybe three in the morning.”

Police have asked anyone who was in Newcastle’s King Street or Annalong’s Oldtown Road after 21:00 BST on Sunday and saw anything strange to contact police.
