A Palestinian was killed Tuesday when Israeli police invaded a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank in a “counter-terrorism” operation that provoked violent protests.

The fatal shooting was the latest in a surge of violence in the West Bank and Israel this month when the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and the Jewish holiday of Passover coincided.

Ahmed Ibrahim Oweidat, 20, died “before dawn today in Aqabat Jaber camp, outside Jericho, from critical wounds inflicted by live bullets to the head,” according to the Palestinian health ministry.

According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, two other individuals were wounded by live fire when “undercover” soldiers invaded the camp overnight.

According to an Israeli army statement to AFP, soldiers conducted a nighttime raid in Aqabat “to apprehend wanted suspects.”

“During the operational activity, dozens of Palestinians violently rioted and attacked the soldiers,” it said, adding that no Israeli troops were hurt.

“The rioters burned tires and hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails at the soldiers. The soldiers responded with riot dispersal means and live ammunition.”

His body, shrouded in the Palestinian flag and the Fatah movement of President Mahmud Abbas, was carried from a Ramallah hospital to Jericho for the funeral, where crowds of mourners endured 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) heat. As the body was being carried away from the family home, Oweidat’s mother sobbed as she gave her son one last embrace.
