Paris: two people shot dead while speeding toward cops

On the evening of the French election, police in central Paris opened fire on a car speeding towards them, killing two people inside, a police source told AFP.
According to the same police source, the vehicle was traveling in the opposite direction of traffic on the Pont Neuf when it accelerated towards the officers, who opened fire.
According to the source, two of the vehicle’s occupants died and another was injured.
According to an AFP journalist, a sizable police presence was present at the scene in the capital.
Around 1:30 a.m., Laure Beccuau, the Paris prosecutor, arrived (2330 GMT).
An investigation into “attempted voluntary manslaughter on persons in positions of public authority” has been initiated.
The incident occurred just hours after French President Emmanuel Macron won re-election, defeating challenger Marine Le Pen in a race that saw the far-right come dangerously close to seizing power for the first time in decades.
