A man who looks and sounds like Santa Claus is running for the United States House of Representatives from Alaska.

The man who legally changed his identity to Santa Claus many years ago intends to run against several of the state’s political heavyweights.

According to Fox9, he also stated that he would not spend more than $400 (Rs. 30,600) on his campaign, describing the large sums raised for political campaigns as “ridiculous.”

While some may think that Santa Claus running for office is a comedy, he has a long history of public service.

He has also volunteered for 30 different non-profit organisations, according to Fox9. He was the special assistant deputy police commissioner for New York City at one point, according to Fox9.

He claimed he chose to officially alter his identity after seeing a youngster in a vehicle exclaim “Santa! I love you!” to him after growing his beard and volunteering as Santa Claus.

He announced his political leanings and agenda on his Twitter account as a candidate for office. He wrote, “I’m happy to announce that I’m a candidate in the special election for the U.S. House of Representatives for Alaska in 2022! I’m an independent, progressive, and democratic socialist with an affinity for Bernie Sanders, and I aim to represent ALL Alaskans”.

He stated in an interview with FOX TV Station on April 22 that “a lot of my platform resembles Bernie’s, but rather than adding 20 pages to my website, SantaClausForAlaska.com, I just refer people to Berniesanders.com/issues if they’re really interested.”
