Saudi Arabia restated its position on Palestine before the United Nations on Wednesday, calling for the end of Israeli occupation, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital city, and the guaranteed right of return for refugees.

Counselor Mohammed Al-Ateeq, charge d’affaires of Saudi Arabia’s permanent representation to the UN, delivered the message during a speech to a UN Security Council session to examine the Middle East and Palestinian crisis.

He emphasized the importance of comprehensive and long-term peace in the Middle East as a strategic option for ending the conflict, based on the two-state solution, in accordance with international references, the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, refugee return, and ending Israel’s occupation of all Arab territories.

Al-Ateeq said: “The Muslims’ holy month of Ramadan has witnessed the Israeli occupation forces storming Al-Aqsa Mosque, closing its gates, and attacking defenseless worshippers inside the mosque and in its outer courtyards.”

He stated that the Kingdom strongly opposed Israel’s activities, calling them clear aggression against the Islamic nation and a breach of international resolutions.

The Saudi diplomat urged the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to hold Israel completely accountable for its ongoing crimes against Palestinians and their territories, which he said would only lead to greater violence and security problems in the region.
