As part of South Korea’s promise to becoming carbon neutral by 2050, President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol has committed to restrict the sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines by 2035

Industry groups such as the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association and the Korea Automobile Parts Association have expressed opposition to Yoon’s plan, claiming that the deadline for fully converting to electric vehicles is impossible.

Climate change, according to Deok-heon Son, vice president of the Korean Metal Workers’ Union, is both an economic and an environmental catastrophe for the industry’s workers.
“An earlier transition to electric vehicles would be a smarter method to address the climate catastrophe while also ensuring the Korean auto industry’s competitiveness,” Son added. “The transformation must be fair and inclusive, and employees and unions must be treated as important stakeholders.”
