The MHRA has given Valneva vaccine regulatory approval

According to the MHRA, the UK’s independent medicines regulator is the first in the world to approve the Valneva medication. It’s the sixth coronavirus vaccination to be approved by the MHRA

“Our approval of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Valneva today follows a comprehensive evaluation of the vaccine’s safety, quality, and effectiveness, as well as expert opinion from the government’s independent scientific advisory body, the Commission on Human Medicines,” said MHRA chief executive Dr June Raine.

The virus is generated in a lab and then rendered fully dormant, preventing it from infecting cells or replicating in the body but still eliciting an immunological response to the COVID-19 virus.

The MHRA stated that this approach for developing vaccinations is already widely employed in the production of flu and polio vaccines.

Last year, the previous chairperson of the country’s vaccination taskforce slammed Valneva’s decision to walk out of the deal before the vaccine had completed clinical testing.

The government may have “behaved in bad faith” in cancelling the arrangement, according to Dame Kate Bingham, who will step down at the end of 2020.

Very high infection rates, according to the NHS Confederation, are having a “significant impact” on the health sector, which is facing challenges similar to those seen in a “poor winter” long into spring.
Downing Street, on the other hand, has opposed requests to reinstate more masking and a push to encourage mixing outside.
